For Black History Month, we begin with a film that presents the experience of two Black Canadian brothers growing up in the Scarborough district of Toronto in the early 1990’s. Written and directed by Clement Virgo, Brother stars Aaron Pierre and Lamar Johnson (both are terrific) as Francis and Michael, sons of immigrants from Jamaica, who immerse themselves in the hip-hop scene while growing up in a neighbourhood prone to gang violence and police brutality. A brilliant, moving, and haunting film about love and family.
