Winner of the Ecumenical Jury Award and Best Actor Award at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, Broker concerns the illegal activity of selling abandoned babies for adoption. It’s a dark subject, but the film is remarkably light. Acclaimed Japanese writer/director Hirokazu Kore-eda has created a beautiful, humanizing and profound film. Ella Kemp of IndieWire sums it up well: “The execution of this premise is, somehow, miraculous in its sensitivity, asking questions about issues of ethics, of choice, of money, and murder, and family, and how to find love in all this sorry mess.”
