Set in 1960s Poland, this is a moving and intimate drama about 18-year-old Anna, a sheltered orphan raised in a convent. On the verge of taking her vows, the Mother Superior insists she first visit her sole living relative, an aunt who shocks the innocent Anna by telling her that she is really Ida and that her Jewish parents were murdered during the Nazi occupation. This revelation triggers a heart-wrenching journey into the secrets of the repressed past. This is a powerful film about the intersection of the personal with momentous historic events. It won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film.
