Seniors Activities at CYAC

The Seniors Activities at the Community Youth Activity Centre are designed to cater to a wide range of interests and abilities, our centre offers a diverse array of programs and services aimed at promoting physical well-being, mental stimulation, and social interaction. The Centre in which the activities are held is a dynamic and inclusive space dedicated to enhancing the lives of the people in our community.

Activities will take place at the St. Andrews Community Youth Activity Centre during hours in which the facility is currently underutilized. With ample time for additional programming, this space is ideal for older adults due to the modern amenities, central location, and welcoming environment. Our programs will take place Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:00AM – 2:00PM, and Fridays from 9:00AM – 12:00PM.

Programs:

Aqua Fit at the Garcelon Civic Centre
Mondays – 10AM – 1PM
Starting January 6th
Aqua Fit also known as water aerobics or aqua aerobics, is a low-impact exercise program conducted in a pool, specifically designed to cater to the fitness needs of older adults. This fun and invigorating workout takes advantage of water’s natural buoyancy and resistance, making it an ideal option for seniors looking to stay active without putting undue stress on their joints. Aqua Fit is not only a great way to stay physically active but also a refreshing and enjoyable experience that promotes overall well-being. The combination of exercise and water creates a unique and effective workout that helps seniors stay healthy, feel confident, and remain socially engaged.

This activity will take place at the Garcelon Civic Centre in St. Stephen, and will start at 11AM. Don’t have a drive? No problem, meet us at the Community Youth Activity Centre at 10:00AM and jump on the Hop on Hop off bus. The bus will leave the centre at 10:10AM sharp and return by 1PM. Registration for this activity is required, and is based on a first come first served basis! Walking Track at the Garcelon Civic Centre
Mondays – 10AM – 1PM
The Walking Track is a low-impact fitness activity which promotes health and social engagement for older adults. Participants will enjoy walks on a safe, well-maintained track tailored to their pace and comfort level. The program provides a fun and supportive environment to improve fitness, meet new friends, and enjoy the outdoors. The Hop on – Hop off bus service is available, offering convenient transportation to and from the track, ensuring accessibility for all participants. If you require the bus service, meet us at the Community Youth Activity Centre at 9:45AM and jump on the Hop on Hop off bus. The bus will leave the centre at 10AM sharp and return at 1PM. Registration for this activity is required, and is based on a first come first served basis! Seated Tai Chi
Mondays – 10AM – 11AM
Starting January 6th
This gentle, low-impact exercise focuses on slow, flowing movements and the breath—all of which promote flexibility, core strength, and relaxation. Perfect for beginners and those who prefer to practice from a seated position.  Tai Chi helps you slow down your monkey mind, and brings you to the present moment— where calm and stillness reside. Studies have shown that Tai Chi can improve memory, reduce blood pressure, and reduce stress and anxiety. Join a supportive group setting where you can move at your own pace and embrace the harmony of mind, body, and spirit. No special equipment needed—just comfortable clothing and a willingness to feel great!

Paint Class with Carla
Mondays – 12PM – 2PM

Starting January 6th
Over six weeks we will learn the basics about painting. You will be introduced to the colour wheel, value scale and mixing paint. Using a variety of mediums and tools. Carla will be giving demonstrations. You will have a chance to paint from photos from around town as well as a still life. It will be relaxed and you will be surprised how fun and easy it will be. Registration is required for this activity, and is based on a first come first served basis! Registration opens on December 30th. Supported Yoga
Wednesdays – 10AM – 11AM
Starting January 22nd
Supported Yoga is a gentle and adaptable form of yoga designed specifically for older adults. It focuses on improving flexibility, balance, strength, and overall well-being through a series of low-impact poses and breathing exercises. Recognizing the varying levels of mobility and fitness among seniors, the practice can be modified to suit individual needs, with options to perform poses seated in a chair, standing, or on the floor.

Tech Support
Wednesdays – 10AM – 12PM
Starting January 8th
We offer personalized assistance on things such as smartphones, computers, tablets, email, managing social media, and more. By fostering a supportive and patient learning environment, this activity empowers you to stay connected with loved ones, access vital resources, and embrace the benefits of modern technology. Bring your own technology or use ours, we have Computers and iPads.

Table Tennis
Wednesdays – 12PM – 2PM
Starting January 8th
Table Tennis also known as ping-pong, is a fun and engaging sport that offers a perfect blend of physical activity and mental stimulation for older adults. This low-impact game is well-suited for seniors, as it can be played at a comfortable pace and requires minimal physical exertion while still providing significant health benefits. Seniors table tennis is not just a sport but a social experience that encourages both physical health and social engagement. It’s a great way for older adults to stay active, have fun, and connect with others in a relaxed, supportive environment.

Adult Ice Skating
Thursdays – 10:00AM – 12:00PM
Starting October 17th
Our Adult Skate session is held at the W. C. O’Neill Arena Complex. It offers a spacious and well-maintained ice surface, perfect for skaters of all ages and skill levels. Adult Skate typically lasts for a designated period of time, usually ranging from 1 to 2 hours. It’s recommended to arrive a bit early to ensure you have enough time to get your skates on and fully enjoy your session. Equipment required – Ice Skates.

Cribbage
Fridays – 10AM – 12PM
Starting January 10th
Cribbage is a classic card game that is both mentally stimulating and socially engaging, making it a popular activity among older adults. Played with two to four players, cribbage involves strategy, counting, and a bit of luck, making it an excellent way for seniors to keep their minds sharp while enjoying friendly competition. Cribbage is more than just a game—it’s a social ritual that brings people together, encourages mental agility, and provides hours of enjoyable entertainment. Whether in a casual setting or a friendly tournament, cribbage is a cherished pastime that continues to be a favourite among seniors.

Line Dancing
Fridays – 11AM – 11:45AM
Starting January 10th
Line Dancing is a lively and enjoyable form of dance that involves a group of people performing a series of choreographed steps in unison, typically to country, pop, or classic oldies music. Unlike partner dances, line dancing is done individually, with dancers arranged in rows or lines, making it an ideal activity for older adults who want to stay active, socialize, and have fun. Line dancing is not only a great way to stay physically active but also an excellent way to engage the mind and connect with others. It’s a fun, inclusive activity that brings people together in a joyful, rhythmic experience, contributing to overall wellness and happiness.

Coffee Club
1st Friday of every month – 10AM – 12PM
Starting February 7th
Join our Coffee Club for a warm cup of coffee or tea, some lite refreshments and great conversation! Meet new friends, share stories, and enjoy a relaxing, social atmosphere. Whether you’re looking to connect with others or simply enjoy some downtime in good company, our coffee club is the perfect place to start.
